Apple, in September 2023, launched the iPhone 15 Pro with the A16 Bionic chip. Recently, rumors surfaced that Apple will launch the iPhone 16 with a second-generation 3nm chip fabrication process known as N3E. However, Jeff Pu, an Apple analyst, reports that iPhone 16 models next year in 2024 will come with A18 branded chips.

According to Pu, “We expect all iPhone 16 models to feature A18,” and he also mentioned that the chips will be manufactured with chipmaker TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process “N3E.” Pu referred to the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro models, based on TSMC’s first-generation 3nm process “N3B,” as a “transition design.”

Apple is also receiving TSMC’s first-generation 3-nanometer process chips this year. It’s known that Apple has booked nearly 90 percent of the foundry’s 3nm production capacity for its devices.

According to Pu’s reports, these chips are expected to be featured in every iPhone 16 model. In previous months, rumors came that the iPhone 16 would come with Advanced 3nm Chip Technology. Now, rumors have surfaced on the internet that Apple will skip the A17 chip and introduce the A18 Chip. It might be too early to guess what Apple will execute at the time, and we can only speculate based on insights from reputable Apple analysts.

  • iPhone 16: A18 chip (N3E)
  • iPhone 16 Plus: A18 chip (N3E)
  • iPhone 16 Pro: A18 Pro chip (N3E)
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max: A18 Pro chip (N3E)

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus come with the A16 Bionic chips. According to rumors today, the iPhone 16 will feature the A18 chip. This is a significant jump from A16 to A18, indicating that two models might skip the A17-branded chip. TSMC also mentioned that N3E chips are less expensive and offer much improved performance.

As we know, the iPhone 16 will be released in 2024. Pu’s statements might be an educated guess for marketing purposes, so it remains to be seen if Apple actually goes ahead with the A18 and A18 Pro branding.
